chik-fil-a-lienation

Chik-fil-A , and The Cellar, both restaurants on campus, were the providers for the materials used in this photo. The French fries were from the Cellar and the sauces and the drink were from Chik-fil-A.

The theme of alienation is in fact present in this picture. The various color sauces are being indulged in by Jason, and the white sauce is flipped over upside down in the darker section of the photo. Darkness is somewhat representative of loneliness and being alienated.

I wanted to do something different than the ordinary, so I chose to work with food. It was fun.

The idea of race and white privilege came into mind. If the white sauce represented the white man and the colored sauces represented other ethnicities, then the white man is being segregated from society (the colored sauces). This is something abnormal from history, where whites have always been the people doing the segregating.

The Loneliest Time of Day

For some people, college can be an incredibly hard situation to adapt to. With all the new classes, possible new roommates, and having the freedom to do whatever you want, students can get easily lost. Here we have Rod sitting outside having a lonely lunch. During classes, it doesn't matter who you know, you just have to sit there and take notes. However, lunch time is a totally different situation. If social interactions are difficult for you, lunch can be the loneliest time of day. The awkwardness of sitting alone and having the feeling that everyone is watching you, silently scrutinizing you for not eating lunch with other people. Rob has his legs close together to portray an image of uneasiness or nervousness and he is outside because everyone else is sitting inside at tables with their friends. The couple walking by emphasizes that Rod has no one to interact with while the couple has each other 24/7. The background is also important to notice. While the couple is walking by and will easily pass this jungle, Rod is stuck here getting closer and closer to losing himself into complete isolation.

Social Alienation

This picture represents an individual's alienation from the social world. Collin is siting on the couch alone looking at a door; which symbolizes all the social opportunities that could exist. The point of view shows that the room is empty and has no connection to the outside world; i.e cell phone, computer, television. We wanted the viewer to get a complete sense of emptiness and alienation.

We choose neutral colors with low intensity for this photo, because generally neutral colors lack excitement. In many ways the choice of color in this picture reflects the individual's alienation with people and the lack of intensity in the colors leaves the viewer with a feeling of emptiness similar to that of feeling lonely. The solid walls are like the ones we put up to protect ourselves in everyday social life; another obstacle that can lead to feeling or being alienated.

We wanted the picture to incorporate as less room space as possible to show that you don not need anything to alienate yourself.

Educational Confinement: Artist Statement

This photo is titled "Educational Confinement", because its purpose is to explore the idea of agitation, and one way of exploring agitation was the idea of being torn between academic responsibilities and our desire to be free of responsibility.

We decided to contrast the brightness of the outside with the darkness of the library, and this is symbolic of the broader meaning of the photo, because it is about juxtaposing our free time with time spent outside of school. The darkness of the photo reflects the level of happiness the student gets from studying and the brightness reflects his desire for freedom and therefore happiness.

The props used for the photo were books and we choose these books because of their size and seemingly esoteric content. The choice of props again shows how frustrating, and inapplicable to daily life school can sometimes be. The use of Billy in the photo was to capture a student who was distracted from his educational pursuits with the possibilities the outside world holds.

Billy is clearly contemplating something beyond what school offers and the photo leaves the viewer to speculate what that may be. However, considering the context in which this photo was taken, which is at a university with a college student, some may interpret the student to be thinking of normal things college students think about. That could mean anything from parties, to grades, to typical outside activities like hiking or playing sports.

All of these considerations lead to the overarching theme, which is the disconnect between education from library books and freedom from being outside. This is the source of the students agitation, with his current obligation.
